FRIDAY, I'M IN LOVE / the whiskey barrel experience
Last Christmas my parents bought me and my husband a little barrel that you age whiskey and other spirits in.
They even had it personalized with our last name.
I’m a little ashamed to say that until a couple of weeks ago it has sat on a shelf, unused. We bought the bourbon to put it months ago. Why did this take us so long?!
The first step was to fill it with hot water to seal it. Once sealed, you can then add in your spirit. We chose bourbon for the initial curing, since that’s what the instructions recommended. We used Kirkland Signature Premium Small Batch Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (103 proof – yikes) to start off with.
The insert that came with the barrel stated that there was a whiskey barrel food chain of sorts that goes like this:
Bourbon --> Whiskey --> Scotch --> Rum --> Tequila
Sounds pretty fun, right? We bought it.
The notes also said to taste your batch weekly because of the small barrel size, your spirit will age much faster than it would in a normal sized barrel. I set up a page in my Bullet Journal for tracking the tasting.
We did our first tasting last Friday and it was pretty hilarious. Did you notice our tasting notes for 11/25? It was pretty bad. We laughed hysterically the whole time.
The last thing to do was turn the barrel a quarter turn and wait until next week. The suspense is killing us. Can’t wait to taste it this Friday! I’m rooting for gasoline overtones.
